AUSTIN, Texas — Out Youth is opening new doors to the LGBTQ+ youth community after its central location suffered significant damage due to a water leak.
The new drop-in center will be in South Austin and include tools to create art, reading material and electronics.
Out Youth is a safe haven for young peple of all sexual orientations and gender identities, according to Director of Programs and Operations Jaryn Holbrook Janeway.
"We want to be a place where they feel warm and loved and accepted," Holbrook Janeway said.
The leak happened on July 24 and left the center, dubbed "The Little Blue Bungalow," uninhabitable. The home was left with damaged floorings, ceilings, books, electronics and more.
Although the house is insured, there isn't enough to cover the costs to rebuild it, leading the nonprofit to start a "Rebuilding Fund" where anyone can donate.
Holbrook Janeway said Out Youth was able to save some items from the central center, but the nonprofit is hoping to replenish what it lost to boost the new location and hopefully restore its blue bungalow.
"There was a lot that was lost. But what we are doing here is the same thing that we've always done," Holbrook Janeway said. "The house is special. It always will be. But we are hoping to make this space here in South Austin as special."
The home has been serving the community since 1998. According to Holbrook Janeway, it's a place meant for anyone who feels as though they don't belong.
"We know the importance of providing a space where anyone can experience that sense of home – and I do mean anyone," Holbrook Janeway said.
Out Youth in South Austin will open on Aug. 18.
