CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — On Friday, Padre Island homeowners were taking action to prepare for whatever Hurricane Beryl may bring.
3NEWS spoke to a couple of homeowners that say they began to board their windows up because of the uncertainty right now. Not knowing where exactly Beryl will make landfall is putting them on edge.
Many residents said it's better to be safe than sorry.
Branden Green said he first started getting calls about putting up plywood in the community a week ago and now he is busy with back to back work. However, he says it's better for homeowners to make that call earlier rather than later.
"Get ahead of the game in case something dramatic, like a disaster does happen faster than people think and they can leave sooner," Green said. "Instead of letting their house and glass break and flood. So sooner you get to it the faster you can leave."
Padre Islander Holly Ryon began hurricane preparations on her parents' home of 40 years on the Fourth of July.
"We spent a lot of time yesterday, cleaning out the side of house from all potential debris, anything that would go flying and would damage neighbor's property and our property," Ryon said. "Then this morning I've been up since 5:15, probably, just started boarding since 6:15 when there was light out."
Another homeowner, Allie Dew who is awaiting the birth of her child said her family made the decision to board their home and head to San Antonio for safety.
"Better be safe than sorry and especially when it comes to having a family," Dew said. "You know you don't want to get stranded somewhere and not have electricty for days on end. And I'm due on Tuesday, so we're being extra caution this year."
Ryon urges the community the best time to board up your home is now because waiting can become too late.
"You know the beautiful thing about hurricanes is that we have the time, Alan has been telling us for a little while now that it's coming and to keep and eye on it and, I'm just taking advantage of that time," she said. "It's not something you can do quickly."
Green urges residents to make decisions regarding boarding up their windows soon because wooden material might be running out at stores.
