Did your pet go missing during the storm or Fourth of July fireworks in Austin on Wednesday?
Chances are you're one of many pet owners in this predicament.
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the loud noises and flashing lights brought on by fireworks frighten pets, causing them to run. This, in turn, causes an uptick in lost dogs and cats after the Fourth of July.
According to national statistics from PetAmberAlert.com, animal control officials see a 30 percent increase in lost pets between July 4 and 6, with July 5 being one of the busiest days for shelters.
The Austin Animal Center received an influx of lost animals due to the storm and fireworks show across the city Wednesday, the shelter said. They encourage all pet owners who are missing their furry friends to visit their facility, located on 7201 Levander Loop. If they can, they want to get every pet back to their owner.
"That's our number one goal, we want that animal to go home," said Marisa Ledesma. "Because that family has loved them, they miss them and that's just a reminder for everyone to microchip their animals."
Reclaim and adoption fees will be waived through Monday, July 9, according to the shelter. AAC is open every day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can also visit their website at www.austinanimalcenter.org to see a list of lost or adoptable animals.
