City of Pflugerville reveals cause of 'significant' gas leak Wednesday night

Crews worked to repair a gas leak affecting the area between Kelly Lane and Kennemer Drive.

PFLUGERVILLE, Texas — We now know the cause of a "significant" gas leak that caused evacuations for some Pflugerville residents Wednesday night.

At around 8:15 p.m., the city of Pflugerville said it notified residents that a major gas leak was impacting an area from Mallard Pond Trail to Hanging Rock Drive, including sections off Kennemer Drive. Seven homes in the immediate area were evacuated out of an abundance of caution.

The city said police were in direct contact with the affected residents, and three notifications were issued through the PfAlert system.

Evacuations in the area were lifted by 9:45 p.m., but the city said the situation was still being closely monitored. In an update on Thursday, the city said it appears the leak was caused by accidental damage during construction by a third party utility contractor.

Kelly Lane and Kennemer Drive were closed to all traffic for a portion of Wednesday evening. Police and fire crews responded to the area to assist with traffic control and safety assessments.

"We are appreciative of the quick response from all crews involved and we apologize for the disruption this caused our residents," the city said Thursday.
