4th Street bar owners speak out after arrest made in attack on gay couple

The owners of two nightclubs on 4th Street stood together shortly after Austin police arrested one of the suspects involved in this hate crime.

AUSTIN, Texas — Director of Operations for Rain on 4th and Oilcan Harry's Scott Percifull spoke on the behalf of both establishments regarding the hate crime on a gay couple back in January.

First and foremost, the two nightclubs are grateful that the couple is recovering and doing well.

Austin police arrested Frank Macias, who was one of the alleged assailants in the attack, on Monday. The remaining three suspects were arrested Tuesday.

The owners of these two bars said they are proud to be a part of the Austin community and said they will not just stand by when someone is threatened or assaulted.

Percifull stated they want to thank Austin police, Crime Stoppers and everyone else who was involved in helping with this attack, considering the limited resources.

They believe it was a culmination of many aspects that helped make the arrest today, which allows the investigation to be ongoing. They also received video showing the attack and assailants walking away.

The final reward for helping with this crime ended up at $13,000.

Percifull stated they still are unsure where the tip came from, but they are glad it came in.

Victor Martinez, chair of the LGBTQ "Quality of Life" Advisory Commission with the City of Austin, said patrols have been increased in the area where the attack happened.

He said his group hopes to start an awareness campaign with APD about violence against LGBTQ people.

"Hopefully this will set an example to those that might hurt our community,” said Martinez. “That we will not put up with it and the city will not put up with it."

The "Rainbow Patrol," a group of volunteers that walk with people as they leave gay bars at night, has been set up since the attack occurred.
