Round Rock Dragon Band prepares to perform as first high school invited to London Band Week

The band is leaving June 24 and will be in the United Kingdom for a week doing different performances and showcases.

ROUND ROCK, Texas —

The Round Rock High School Dragon Band is getting a special send-off for an international performance.

The band was invited to London Band Week. Members will leave June 24 and will be in the United Kingdom for a week doing different performances and showcases.

Students in the band said it's a great opportunity and they are excited to represent their high school across the pond.

"I think marching band has come to the point where it's a lot of theatrical production, rather than like the uniform marching that you might see in like a parade or like what they do over in London," upcoming senior Meredith Bobbitt said.

Recent graduate Jacob Elder agreed, adding, "It's a really cool opportunity for us to perform internationally and kind of like, put our name out there, you know, on like an international stage."

The Dragon Band is the first American high school band invited to perform during London Band Week – something the band directors take great pride in.

"There's no words really to express how big of a deal it is. It's just an absolute honor to be invited to go and to spend this week with all these kids in London and show them a whole new country, completely different culture," Associate Band Director Cathy Benford said.

Head Band Director David Mobley agreed, adding, "This is going to be so cool. We're going to go over there – and a country we've never been to – perform in a place in a way that we've never performed before. And I'm going to be really, really proud to watch that happen."

The band will have a send-off event Monday night, where they will show off what they will be performing in London.
