ROUND ROCK, Texas -- The Round Rock Independent School District is considering forming a school police department.
At a Round Rock ISD Board of Trustees meeting Thursday evening, members are expected to weigh the pros and cons of the police department. Round Rock ISD said the 2020-2021 school year is the last year that Round Rock will provide school resource officers to secondary campuses.
The school district expects it would cost a little more than $1 million to provide a school police department.
In a proposal created by the district June 7, the school district said a school police department would ensure "that we consistently have officers at all of our secondary campuses." The district also said Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks and Williamson County Sheriff Robert Chody have said that creating a school police department is the best option for the district.
The district said RRISD officers would train school district staff on district policies, procedures and new initiatives such as diversity training.
