AUSTIN, Texas — Police have identified the man shot and killed by police on Monday, May 27, at the San Paloma Apartments in North Austin.
According to the Austin Police Department (APD), officers responded to a call about a disturbance at approximately 1:30 a.m. at the apartment complex on Tech Ridge Boulevard near Interstate 35. Callers said they could hear neighbors arguing, things being thrown and a woman screaming for help.
Interim Police Chief Robin Henerson said at around 1:48 a.m., officers forced their way inside one of the apartments and saw a man stabbing a woman. That's when officers shot the man, identified as 48-year-old Ensel Maclare-Urgelles.
Maclare-Urgelles was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m.
The woman sustained multiple stab wounds and was also taken to a local hospital. In an update on Monday, June 3, APD said the woman was in a stable condition. No other people were injured during the incident.
Allison Frazier lives in the building where it happened and told KVUE she initially thought the disturbance was something else.
"It was on the second floor and I live above them … It's really scary, especially as a college student who's away from their parents," Frazier said. "Really scary. We thought it was our cat knocking stuff over last night, but it was not a cat," Frazier said.
Per standard APD protocol, the officer who fired their weapon will be on administrative duty pending investigations. APD said that officer has six years of service with the department.
The shooting was captured on officers’ body cameras. Per APD policy, video from the case will be released within 10 business days.
