Man who was missing for a week found dead underneath house at resort in South Carolina

Stanley Kotowski was first reported missing by his family on Aug. 16, 2024

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Authorities in South Carolina have found the body of a man who had been missing for a week at the Sea Pines resort in Hilton Head.

Beaufort County sheriff's deputies said the remains of who they believed to be 60-year-old Stanley Kotowski of Massachusetts were found Tuesday underneath a house at Sea Pines. Authorities said they got a call around 11:30 a.m. Monday of suspicious activity in the area, and when they responded, they found his body. The remains were then sent to the coroner, who was set to conduct an autopsy sometime Tuesday.

The sheriff's department did not give any indication as to how they think the man may have died.

Kotowski was first reported missing by his family on Aug. 16 at their vacation rental property. That property was not where the body was ultimately found. Law enforcement said Kotowski was considered in danger at the time but did not elaborate.

On Saturday, Aug. 24, the sheriff's department released a video of a ring doorbell camera on their Facebook page showing Kotowski leaving the home around 10:30 a.m. on the day he went missing.

The sheriff's department said that during their multi-day search, they used K9s, helicopters, drones, boats, and foot patrols to find him. Authorities entered his information into a national missing persons database and sent it to agencies statewide.

In an interview with WTOC-TV over the weekend, Kotowski's family said that they were afraid for him and that his disappearance had been like a "nightmare."

The Sea Pines resort is one of the most well-known destinations for travelers in the Hilton Head area and is popular with people around the country.
