Decker Elementary students released from hospitals after exposure to floor sealant

Several adults and students at Decker Elementary School were hospitalized Monday after developing symptoms from indoor floor sealant.

TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas — EDITORS NOTE: Based on reports from officials, a prior version of this report stated the symptoms were caused by paint thinner. Manor ISD later discovered the cause was floor sealant.

According to St. David's North and Dell Children's Medical Center, all of the Decker Elementary School students have been released from the hospitals they were sent to Monday morning after developing symptoms from the odors of floor sealant.

Austin-Travis County EMS reported around 11 a.m. that medics and the Travis County Fire Department were responding to 8500 Decker Lane after reports that several patients -- both adults and children -- were complaining of minor symptoms.

Eight-year-old, Kumar Shephard is a third-grader at Decker Elementary and one of the students who was taken to the hospital.

"It was kind of scary ... I was kind of shocked to go to it," said Shephard.

His mother, Donna Shephard, was also frightened after she was notified by the school district of what happened.

"I got real, real scared because I didn't know what was going on. I panicked. The only way I kept calm is because of my husband," said Donna.

Donna also said she is worried the school district will try to stick her with the medical bill. KVUE asked Scott Thomas, the district's communication manager, about that. Thomas said they are looking into it.

ATCEMS said all patients were removed from the immediate area as authorities investigated. Officials later determined the source of the odor was floor sealant and they began airing out the area.

A total of 18 people -- 15 students and three staff members -- were transported to a combination of Dell Children's Medical Center, St. David's and Dell Seton hospitals.

School officials said all elementary school students and staff were evacuated to Decker Middle School as a precaution. All 432 students will be fed there and classes will return to normal at the elementary school on Tuesday. Austin Fire and EMS evaluated the campus and determined there were no dangerous chemicals, saying the school is safe for students and staff to return.

At a press conference Monday afternoon, Manor ISD said ATCEMS was notified around 10 a.m. after 15 students and three adults reported feeling nauseous and dizziness. It took about 20 minutes to evacuate the entire school, kindergarten through the fifth grade.

Manor ISD said parents were notified through email, the school district's website and by phone. The district will be looking into how medical bills will be paid.
