28 warrants issued in South Austin animal cruelty case, APD says

An investigation was launched last month when neighbors living on Shiloh Drive reported finding the bodies of 11 dogs in South Boggy Creek.

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police say they've issued 28 warrants for people of interest connected to an animal cruelty investigation in South Austin.

An investigation was launched last month when neighbors living on Shiloh Drive, near Menchaca Road, reported finding the bodies of 11 dogs in South Boggy Creek.

At Monday night’s animal advisory commission meeting, Austin Police Department (APD) detectives said they're still investigating, but because they're looking into criminal charges, they can't share much more just yet. The APD Animal Cruelty and Animal Protection units are involved in the investigation.

Last month, neighbors hosted a memorial for the dogs, saying many of them are pet owners themselves and they can't imagine how someone could not love and care for their companions.

“I walk this neighborhood every day, every single day, and just to think somebody would do something so horrific is just heart wrenching,” neighbor Mary Galer said.

Animal Cruelty is a felony punishable by a $10,000 fine and up to two years in prison.
