APD: Officers spent 14 minutes telling an armed man to drop his weapon before deadly shooting

Police said multiple officers shot the man after he raised his gun during the incident.

AUSTIN, Texas — A man is dead after being shot by multiple officers late Tuesday night in North Austin.

According to Austin police, they received a top priority "prowler" call around 11 p.m. about an armed man trying to break into a business on West Anderson Lane near Lamar Boulevard.

New police chief Lisa Davis said surveillance video showed the man trying to break into a business. Officers on the scene said the man was armed with a rock and a gun as they spent 14 minutes trying to deescalate the situation.

Davis said the man raised his hands while holding the gun. Officers perceived it as a threat, which led to at least five of them opening fire. Davis said a less-lethal pepper ball was also used.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and no officers were injured in the incident. All five officers have been put on administrative leave as police investigate.

Meanwhile, Davis said any time that there's a loss of life, it's a tragic situation. She also said additional details on the shooting will be released within 10 business days per department policy.

West Anderson Lane had to be shut down for several hours Wednesday as police investigated. Davis said the area has suffered some threats and break-ins, but that businesses have been proactive with their security.
