AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police have arrested a man in connection to a homicide in southeast Austin on Monday afternoon.
The Austin Police Department said on March 8 the investigation was taking place in the 4400 block of E. Riverside Drive under a bridge.
Police were called to the area after reports of a man shot just after 2 p.m., police said.
Officers arriving on the scene found a man in his mid-20s "with obvious signs of trauma." They performed life-saving measures until EMS arrived, but the man was pronounced dead at 2:18 p.m.
He was identified as Jesse Robert Hernandez, 24, on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, officials added that a male was seen running from the scene immediately after the incident occurred. He was seen taking off in a dark SUV. He was wearing an orange baseball cap, a large tan jacket with a hoodie and black pants.
On Thursday, police said a man had been arrested. The suspect was identified as Zacariah Mechi Lopez. He's been charged with first-degree murder and has been booked in the Travis County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
The incident happened outside a vehicle near a tent camp, police said, but it's not known if the victim was living there.
