Crews battle structure fire off South Congress Avenue in South Austin

Parts of South Congress Avenue were shut down as firefighters worked to contain the fire.

AUSTIN, Texas — Parts of South Congress Avenue were shut down on Saturday as fire crews took on a structure fire at an abandoned building in South Austin.

According to the Austin Fire Department (AFD), firefighters and Austin-Travis County EMS medics were on the scene in the 4900 block of South Congress Avenue as of around 2:45 p.m.

Smoke and “products of combustion” were coming from the building, AFD said. Officials have not released details about potential injuries or the cause of the fire.

As of around 8:40 p.m., fire crews were still on scene working to extinguish the remaining hotspots deep within the building.

According to AFD, the cause of the fire is undetermined. The structure of the building sustained $500,000 worth of damage, while only $2,000 worth of damage occurred to contents inside.
