Spectators gather to watch old Stagecoach Inn roll to its new Round Rock home

Hoisted up and dropped down on wheels, the old Stagecoach Inn rolled from its old location on FM 620 to its new home on Bathing Beach Park on historic Chisholm Trail,

ROUND ROCK, Texas -- A crowd of people turned out to watch crews move the old Stagecoach Inn in Round Rock on Sunday. The move shut down Chisholm Trail and RM 620 until Monday evening.

From its old location on 901 FM 620 to its new location on Bathing Beach Park on historic Chisholm Trail, onlookers, like Doug Brown, watched with excitement.

"It's kind of amazing. Having a building this old jacked up on wheels moving across the street is definitely worth coming out to see," said Brown.

The computer scientist got his son up early on Sunday to watch.

"Never see a building move across the street very often at all. It's quite a spectacle," said Brown.

Edna Rehbein shared Brown's fascination with the old building's move as well.

"It's a pretty exciting moment," said Rehbein.

The Round Rock residents' excitement with the building's slow move comes from a historical sense.

The building is the old Stagecoach Inn.

According to Shirley Marquardt with Round Rock Preservation, it dates back to the 1800s.

"This building is the oldest structure surviving in the city of Round Rock. ... The Stagecoach Inn was a place where settlers would come, they can have a meal and they could spend the night. That meal was usually chicken noodle soup," said Marquadt.

Marquardt said it may even be the oldest Stagecoach Inn in Texas.

The FM 620 Realignment Project forced the building's move.

It was either that or demolition.

Marquardt said that's when the City of Round Rock stepped in and saved it by using hotel occupancy tax money.

But now, the Old Stagecoach Inn needs your help.

She hopes citizens like Brown and Rehbein and their excitement will extend to the Inn's restoration project as well.

Chisholm Trail between Emanuel Street and RM 620 is expected to be closed until Monday night.
