'That'll be a hit for the company' | Mass Spectrum outage affects workers, local businesses

Spectrum officials said the outage was due to an infrastructure issue out of Houston, caused by Beryl.

AUSTIN, Texas — On Tuesday, customers all over Texas dealt with a massive internet and phone service outage, later linked to Spectrum.

The company posted on social media, blaming the outage on a third-party infrastructure issue caused by the impact of Beryl.

Because of the outage, a day of online orders went into the abyss at a local seafood restaurant.

"Our online ordering – customers, those who do have internet service, are coming in with orders, and we don't see it, it's not ready, they have to wait," Alicia Johnson, the manager of Austin's Very Own Saltt, said.

Johnson said the issues were the result of the Spectrum outage stretching across Texas.

The restaurant is newly opened, and she's worried about all of the potential missed transactions on Tuesday.

"That'll be a hit for the company because we don't know if the credit cards are processed. Right now, we're just running offline, and when it comes online is when they process all the credit card transactions," Johnson said.

Restaurants like Austin's Very Own Saltt couldn't take calls. But Johnson and her business aren't alone. Thousands of Austinites reported they struggled to get work done with such a large disruption impacting Spectrum phone, internet and cable services.

Spectrum officials told KVUE the outage was due to an infrastructure issue out of Houston, caused by Beryl.

"Obviously, there was no internet anywhere. We went to Epoch on Far West [Boulevard]. We tried going to Starbucks a little further away from that," said Melany Maurer, who had to search for spots to work at on Tuesday.

For Maurer, the Colorado-based company she works for was fine, but her connection wasn't. So for her and many others, the library seemed to be the next best step.

"Usually, I don't see that many people sitting at tables and doing work. But we were lucky – my fiancé and I actually got a spot at a table because it is pretty busy in there," Maurer said.
