CEDAR PARK, Texas — More than 1,000 shoes were donated this week as part of a student-led fundraiser to benefit Leander Independent School District students.
Toyota of Cedar Park and Hill Country Community Ministries hosted their annual Stuff the Truck event, which saw record-breaking success.
The event gives Leander ISD students on free and reduced lunch programs a new pair of shoes for the school year.
Tiesha Hollaway, who works with Hill Country Community Ministries, said her experience growing up helped inspire her to start the drive.
"I was one of six. I didn't have brand new shoes. Definitely not name brand ones," Hollaway said. "And we just thought it would be a fun project. Well, what we found out in our school districts is that we have students failing P.E. because they don't have a pair of tennis shoes."
According to Hollaway, the fundraiser receives 800 to 1,000 pairs of shoes every year. So far, they've distributed more than 9,000 pairs of shoes.
