The Austin Police Department said the clean-up would take around 12 hours, so surrounding roads would be closed until late Sunday evening. Those roads are: 2500 Webberville Road at Northwestern, 2400 East Seventh Street, 2400 East Sixth Street and 500 Pedernales Street.
The last car was rerailed at 3:35 p.m. Sunday, and there are three cars secured on the commuter tracks that WATCO -- the company that operates the freight service -- cleared overnight.
CapMetro said they didn't anticipate delays to commuter service Monday morning, but delays up to 30 minutes occurred due to a combination of factors including derailment repairs and ongoing construction for PTC implantation. Those delays were resolved and CapMetro was back on schedule by 11 a.m.
Delays could be possible Monday during the evening rush, CapMetro said. You can follow CapMetro on social media for updates. They are hoping to have the Sixth Street crossing repaired and opened by Wednesday. Freight service is expected to resume Tuesday evening.
There is no word yet as to what caused the crash.
