Survivor of Lakeway plane crash released from hospital

Randall "Scott" Nelson was flying with a student pilot when the plane went down on March 14. Kevin Henderson did not survive the crash.

LAKEWAY, Texas — The lone survivor of a fatal Lakeway plane crash last month has now been released from the hospital and has made his way to rehabilitation care.

According to a Facebook post posted by his wife on March 29, Randall "Scott" Nelson was released the day earlier to a rehab center.

"I was a bit concerned at first how this change was going to go given Scott still requires a lot of assistance, but after a day of settling in, I think the transition is going really well," she said.

She wrote that he has three hours of therapy scheduled every day but he is "up for the challenge" and working on his mobility. She said his caretakers expect about five more weeks until he will be able to walk again, and just two more weeks until he is able to go home.

Nelson's wife wrote that the surgeries have been one of the toughest parts.

"The facial reconstruction was a big one, and he's still very swollen and only able to open one eye at the moment," she said. "The pain throughout his body is still really intense, so the doctors here are managing that as best they can. We're hopeful that the swelling in his face will go down over the next few days and he'll start to look and feel a bit more like himself."

However, overall, she said he is doing great.

"I know I say it every time, but seriously, I can't thank you all enough for the continued prayers and support," she said. "You guys are amazing and we feel so blessed to have each of you cheering us on through this long journey to recovery!"
