Police identify man killed in officer-involved shooting in downtown San Marcos

The man, identified as 27-year-old John Richard Camacho, was shot and pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Camacho had an extensive criminal history.

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Police have identified the man who was shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting in San Marcos Friday night.

San Marcos police identified the man as 27-year-old John Richard Camacho.

According to Charley Wilkison, the Executive Director of the Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas (CLEAT), shots were fired in downtown San Marcos on Friday night.

All of the officers involved are OK, according to Wilkison.

During a press conference Saturday morning, police said at roughly 9:30 p.m., they received a call stating a man was shooting at a vehicle in the 100 block of LBJ Drive.

A bystander later reportedly told police that the suspect left the scene in a vehicle. Police said they were able to locate the vehicle traveling on West Hopkins Street.

Police said the vehicle stopped and the passenger, Camacho -- who matched the description they had been given -- stepped out and faced the officers. Despite police commands to put his hands up, police say Camacho pulled out what looked like a semi-automatic gun.

That's when officers fired multiple shots at him.

San Marcos Chief of Police Chase Stapp said, "You absolutely could not tell the difference if you were standing two feet away from it."

Camacho was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Camacho had an extensive criminal history.

"I mean, it's a tragic thing, but that's not a way to deal with police officers," James McFeely said.

McFeely lives right across the street from where the shooting happened.

"Knowing all the facts helps, and it keeps the police accountable," McFeely said. "That's why everyone should know what happened here."

Camacho's weapon was later determined to be a pellet pistol, which looks similar to a semi-automatic handgun, according to police.

There is no word yet if the officers involved are on paid leave.

Chief Stapp said the there will be an extensive investigation within the police department, and the Texas Rangers will get involved.

This is an ongoing investigation. This story will be updated when more information becomes available.
