Suspicious package found near San Marcos residential area deemed ‘harmless’

A suspicious package found on railroad tracks in San Marcos has been deemed by officials as 'harmless,'

SAN MARCOS, Texas -- A suspicious package found on the railroad tracks in a San Marcos residential area Monday evening has been deemed "harmless," San Marcos officials said.

According to officials, the package was found on 1701 Mill Street at 5:30 p.m., an area surrounded by the Copper Beech Townhomes.

The Austin Police Department Bomb Squad helped investigate the package. The tracks were closed and, as a precaution, apartment building 24 at Copper Beech was evacuated as well as an apartment at 1640 Post Road. The rail tracks were reopened at 10:13 p.m.

The City of San Marcos said the item was found in an area commonly used for illegal dumping. San Marcos police will follow up on any leads or additional information they receive about the item or whomever put it there or dumped it, officials said.
