Suspect detained after SWAT situation at East Austin home

Roads in the area are likely to remain closed until 7 a.m.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department said Tuesday morning that a man has been detained after a roughly six-hour SWAT situation.

APD initially said just after midnight Tuesday that an armed person was barricaded inside an East Austin home and the SWAT team was working to get them out.

The person was barricaded inside a home in the 3300 block of Merrie Lynn Avenue, just north of Manor Road.

Police gave an update around 5 a.m. Tuesday, saying that the situation had gotten complicated. A fire had started at the home, so Austin Fire Department crews were responding to put out the flames. Police did not say what caused the fire.

Investigators said they only knew of one person inside the home.

Just after 6 a.m., APD said the suspect had been detained. He was being evaluated by Austin-Travis County EMS due to the fire at the residence.

APD said the suspect is currently being charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Manor Road is closed for about two blocks in both directions, and police said roads will likely to remain closed until 7 a.m.

No additional information is available at this time.
