Texas Gov. Greg Abbott pushing property tax plan

While speaking at Opportunity Austin's investors lunch, Abbott said he wants to cap how much cities and states can raise your property taxes without having to call an election at 2.5 percent.

AUSTIN — In January of 2019, state lawmakers will return to Austin for the 2019 legislative session.

On Wednesday, Gov. Greg Abbott talked about one of the things he wants them to pass.

While speaking at Opportunity Austin's investors lunch, Abbott said he wants to cap how much cities and states can raise your property taxes without having to call an election at 2.5 percent. It is currently 8 percent.

This idea isn't new.

Abbott first proposed lowering the cap this past January.

Last legislative session the House and Senate passed separate bills to lower the percentage, but in the end, they couldn't agree on a number.
