A 21-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder over a 2022 shooting in a South Austin LA Fitness parking lot that left a man dead.

The U.S. Marshals worked with Mexican officials to deport the suspect, Travis County resident Cristian Avila-Solis, after he reportedly fled to Mexico following the shooting.

Avila-Solis is the third suspect identified in the May 23, 2022, incident, which happened in the 1800 block of West Slaughter Lane. The victim, 36-year-old Jose Alberto Aguirre Castellanos, was pronounced dead on the scene.

In May 2022, the Austin Police Department obtained a warrant for Avila-Solis and requested assistance from the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force. The task force contacted Mexican officials to track down Avila-Solis, a U.S. citizen.

On Feb. 17, Mexican officials located and detained Avila-Solis in San Luis Potosi on an immigration violation. On Feb. 18, he was deported back to the U.S. on a commercial flight to Fort Worth, where he was handed over to authorities.

Avila-Solis was booked into the Tarrant County Jail and is awaiting extradition to Travis County as of Tuesday, Feb. 20.

In August 2022, the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force arrested John Wiley Bagwell, 21, in Palmer Lake, Colorado. Bagwell was also wanted on an arrest warrant for first-degree murder in connection with the May 2022 Austin shooting incident.

Witnesses reported seeing three suspects flee the scene of the shooting. Juan Lopez-Espinoza, 18, was charged with murder a few days after the incident.
