SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State University is one of the nation's best employers when it comes to diversity, according to a new report from Forbes magazine.
The business publication ranked the university No. 112 on its national 2019 "Best Employers for Diversity" list. It ranked No. 5 overall in the state of Texas.
Texas State ranked ahead of major corporations like Toyota North America, JPMorgan Chase and even Google. Of the 500 employers on the list, Texas State was one of only two Texas institutions of higher education that made the cut.
To come up with the rankings, Forbes worked with Statista, a statistics firm, to analyze data from a survey of 50,000 employees working for companies employing at least 1,000 people within the U.S.
The report measured factors like diversity, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation equality, age and disability. Other factors like the gender split of companies’ management teams and boards, and whether a company proactively communicates about diversity, were also taken into consideration.
According to the university, recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty, staff and student body has been a major part of its 2017-2023 Diversity and Inclusion Plan.
