AUSTIN, Texas — H-E-B's pilot program appears to be a success.
Less than a month after testing out "tap-to-pay" at its registers, the Texas-based grocery chain is now offering the services across the state.
However, the same catch remains – it's currently only available at Central Market locations.
Earlier this month, H-E-B confirmed that it was exploring ways to enhance how customers shop and pay for their favorite items, including Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay.
The chain has been a major holdout on the tech side at checkout, along with Walmart and Kroger. However, in 2023, Kroger decided to accept the tap-to-pay technology nationwide.
H-E-B wouldn't say if the rollout is still part of the pilot program, but for now, shoppers can at least use their phones at all Central Markets if they leave their wallets behind.
H-E-B added in its response to KVUE that it hopes to expand tap-to-pay services at more stores in the future.
