PHARR, Texas — A criminal investigation has been initiated after a massive meth bust at the Texas border.
U.S. Customs and Border Patrol said a truck hauling coconuts was stopped for a secondary inspection at the Pharr International Bridge on Saturday, Sept. 28.
During a physical investigation, border patrol officers found 378 packages containing nearly 1,950 pounds of alleged methamphetamine hidden within the trailer. Officials said the narcotics had an estimated street value of more than $17.4 million.
Officials said they discovered the drugs with the help of a non-intrusive inspection system and border patrol canines. The narcotics and tractor-trailer were seized and Homeland Security special agents based in San Antonio will lead the criminal investigation.
According to the Director of Field Operations in Laredo, last week border officials also seized 135 pounds of cocaine, 6 pounds of heroin, $123,000 in currency, seven weapons, and made 59 arrests, in addition to the methamphetamine bust.
"This seizure underscores the seriousness of the drug threat we face on a daily basis and the resolve of our officers to keep our communities safe," Port Director Carlos Rodriguez said about the seizure.
