AUSTIN, Texas — It's a big weekend in the world of sports. Millions will be catching all the action as the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles face off in Super Bowl LVII.
As football fans celebrate Super Bowl Sunday, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) wants to make sure everyone is safe on the roads. To help with that, drivers will see an increase in DPS troopers on Sunday from 12:01 a.m. until midnight.
This is part of the nationwide initiative, Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort (CARE).
DPS offered the following safety tips for drivers and passengers:
- Don't drink and drive: Have a plan to get home safely if you have been drinking by using a designated driver or calling for alternate transportation
- Buckle Up: Everyone in a vehicle must wear a seatbelt
- Move Over or Slow Down: Show courtesy on the road by moving over and slowing down when you see police, fire, EMS, Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) vehicles and tow trucks stopped on the side of the road
- Slow down: Especially when driving in bad weather, heavy traffic, unfamiliar areas or construction zones
- Eliminate distractions: DPS noted that "Texas law prohibits the use of portal wireless devices to read, write, or send an electronic message unless the vehicle is stopped." If you’re using a navigation device or app, have a passenger operate it
- Steer It, Clear It: Move your vehicle to clear traffic lanes after a non-injury crash
- Don’t drive fatigued: Give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination
- Roadside Assistance: Keep the Texas Roadside Assistance number, 1-800-525-5555, stored in your phone
- Monitor weather and road conditions: Check Drive Texas to see how conditions are wherever you are traveling.
