AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Democratic National Delegation has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic party's nominee for president a day after President Joe Biden announced he was exiting the race.
The delegation said it convened Monday night to discuss the "path forward" as it neared the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month.
In a statement, the Texas Democratic National Delegation said, in part, "The overwhelming majority of the Texas Democratic National Delegation endorses Vice President Kamala Harris as our party’s nominee for President of the United States."
The Texas Democratic Party and Texas National Delegation Chair Gilberto Hinojosa said Harris' "historic tenure" as the first Black and South Asian woman to be VP has been marked by an "unwavering commitment to justice, equity and progress for all Americans."
"With her extensive experience, dedication to public service, and proven leadership, we believe Kamala Harris is uniquely qualified to defeat Donald Trump and lead our nation forward – championing the values and ideals that unite us as a country," Hinojosa said.
The Texas House Democratic Caucus also endorsed Harris as its nominee for president on Monday.
According to an Associated Press survey, Harris has secured the support of enough Democratic delegates to become her party’s nominee against Trump.
