AUSTIN, Texas — Texas will officially transition its toll services to a different agency.
After reports that the Texas Department of Transportation would explore options to increase efficiency and customer service, the agency has begun informing TxTag customers they will be moved.
In an email obtained by KVUE, TxDOT said it will let the Harris County Toll Road Authority handle collection, billing and customer service for TxTag customers. The HCTRA has managed tolls in the Houston area for 40 years.
What should TxTag users do next?
TxDOT asks users to log into their account before Oct. 15, 2024, to confirm their correct contact, vehicle information and payment methods.
Only active accounts in good standing will be transferred over to the HCTRA. TxDOT said TxTag users can still use their toll tags as intended across Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.
If you don't have a TxTag but are still receiving bills in the mail, you can sign up for the service before the Oct. 15 deadline.
What's considered an inactive account?
TxTag accounts without any activity in the last 12 months will be inactive and ineligible to be transferred. Those who wish to be transferred over to HCTRA must contact TxTag customer service before Oct. 15.
Meanwhile, those with unpaid balances could face "escalation actions" if unpaid before the transition. If you decide to close your account but still have funds in it, you will be refunded any remaining balance.
TxDOT said customers will manage everything through the HCTRA website after the switch. You can also visit Houston area EZ TAG stores, Walmart and H-E-B to manage your account after the change.
Meanwhile, TxDOT said it will continue to own and maintain its current toll roads and equipment, while the Texas Transportation Commission sets rates for TxDOT-owned roads. Fortunately, TxDOT said toll rates won't be affected.
TxDOT responds to change
According to TxDOT, HCTRA will take over the toll road functions from TTEC Government Solutions. Their contract runs through Feb. 28, 2025, but HCTRA can take over once an agreement is executed.
TxDOT also confirmed that the Texas Transportation Commissioners still have to sign off on the change, despite informing customers of the process and deadline. TxDOT can still stop all transition activities until a "Toll Services Agreement" is executed.
