The Department of Public Safety is investigating after three people were killed in a crash in Bastrop County Wednesday morning.

Authorities said the crash happened along FM 2104 in Smithville. DPS said the driver - identified Thursday as John Wesley Rosales, 60, of Smithville - suffered a medical condition, which caused him to drift into the southbound lanes, hitting a barbed wire fence and then into a tree. Two women who were also in the car died at the scene, and DPS said the passenger in the backseat was not wearing her seat belt. The women were identified by DPS as Mage Garza Rosales, 60, and Bernice Rivera, 52, both of Smithville.

"We don't believe speed's a factor, due to the fact that they were probably going the speed limit or close to it. No pre-impact braking or any pre-impact skid marks, so there was no evasive action taken to avoid another vehicle in the roadway,” said Sgt. Dane Baker.
