TxDOT explores changes to TxTag to increase efficiency

TxDOT says its toll tags will still function as intended in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.

AUSTIN, Texas — Changes could be coming for toll road drivers in Texas.

The Texas Department of Transportation says it's exploring options to increase its efficiency and customer service.

One of the options on the table for TxDOT includes a contract that would transition its processing and customer service account management services to the Harris County Toll Road Authority.

TxDOT says the HCTRA is an experienced tolling authority that would provide the best service for customers and simplify the billing process. If the contract is approved, the transition would give drivers more options for paying tolls and managing their accounts in person.

Will drivers still be able to use TxTag?

TxDOT says TxTag will still function as intended in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. You're just asked to keep your account information up to date and have enough money in your account to cover the cost of your tolls.

TxTag users should log into the account and confirm their address, vehicle information and payment methods to make sure everything is up to date.

Before the possible transition, TxDOT will announce a deadline to provide final updates before a blackout period that would prevent customers from updating their information. After the blackout period, updates will need to be processed through HCTRA.

If you don't have a toll tag but still receive bills in the mail, you can still sign up for a TxTag before the transition.

What changes could come?

TxDOT says customers will manage everything through the HCTRA website. You can also visit Houston area EZ TAG stores, Walmart and H-E-B to manage your account after the transition.

TxDOT says it will continue to own and maintain its current toll roads and equipment, while the Texas Transportation Commission sets rates for TxDOT-owned roads.

Fortunately, TxDOT says toll rates won't be affected.
