Several train cars derailed in East Austin

Responders said the train hit a utility pole, prompting power outages in the area.

AUSTIN, Texas — Several train cars derailed early Tuesday morning in East Austin.

A train hit a utility pole around 3:45 a.m. by East Sixth Street and Robert T. Martinez Jr. Street, according to the Austin Fire Department (AFD).

Crews said seven train cars turned over, and power outages occurred in the area.

AFD said two of the cars contained gravel while the other five were not carrying anything. The train is made up of 90 cars total.

Responders also said no injuries are reported at this time and no hazardous material was inside the cars.

AFD, the Austin Police Department and the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS) initially responded.

As of 6:30 a.m., AFD is working to clean the scene, while Austin Energy and CapMetro are also on site.

The train tracks likely won't be open until 5 p.m., and drivers should avoid the area until further notice.
