1 dead, 4 injured after train derails, hits Chamber of Commerce building in Pecos, Texas

Pecos City Manager Charles Lino updated the public on the train derailment at around 7:30 p.m.

PECOS, Texas — One person is dead and four people are injured after a train derailed and hit the Chamber of Commerce building in Pecos, according to Pecos City Manager Charles Lino during a press conference Wednesday night.

The derailment happened around 5 p.m. after a train struck a tractor trailer near Oak Street and Dot Stafford Street, according to Lino.

Lino said that "three cars" had hazardous material in them. However, everything is contained.

“There has been no release from [the hazardous material from the cars]," Lino told NewsWest 9. "The only release if anything was some diesel from the engine and that has been contained also."

One person, who was seriously injured, has been taken to a hospital in Odessa for treatment. Three were treated on scene and taken to Reeves Regional Health, according to Lino.

Traffic Information from Reeves County:

• Southbound Traffic on Highway 285 is being diverted to F Street and County Road 1216.

• Northbound Traffic on Highway 285 will experience closures on 3rd and 4th Streets.

According to NewsWest 9 on scene Wednesday night, the derailment area is blocked off.

The Texas Department of Public Safety and Union Pacific were on site investigating. The Pecos Police Department is the lead agency on the derailment.
