Travis Co. deputy involved in North Austin shooting

The Travis County Sheriff's Office confirmed one of their deputies was involved in a shooting Monday afternoon in North Austin.
The suspect fled to a nearby convenience store near the intersection of I-35 and Wells Branch Parkway where the deputy confronted him and shots were fired.

AUSTIN -- A 21-year veteran with the Travis County Sheriff's Office shot and injured a robbery suspect Monday in North Austin, after he allegedly pulled a gun on the deputy inside a convenience store.

According to the sheriff's office, Michael Oluwafemi Alegbeleye, 31, tried to rob a woman at the Exxon/McDonald's near the intersection of Interstate 35 and Grand Avenue at around 5:37 p.m. The woman told police she saw a handgun in his hand while she was pumping gas.

While speaking to the victim, deputies received a call for a robbery at the Q Mart located at Wells Branch Parkway and I-35. A deputy confronted Alegbeleye inside the Q Mart, and after refusing to comply with deputies showed a handgun. Officers used a taser on Alegbeleye, but it was ineffective on him. According to the sheriff's office, the deputy fired one shot at Alegbeleye, wounding him.

Alegbeleye was taken into custody and taken by Austin-Travis County EMS to Round Rock Medical Center to be treated for his wound. He was then taken to the Travis County Jail.

Alegbeleye has been charged with two counts of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and one count of aggravated assault on a public servant.

The deputy involved in the shooting has been identified as Sgt. Ruben Garcia. He has been assigned administrative duties pending an investigation, which is standard in officer-involved shootings.
