Family of inmate who died in custody files lawsuit against Travis County

The lawsuit claims that an inmate was denied blood thinners, which led to his death.

AUSTIN, Texas — A lawsuit has been filed against Travis County, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the University of Texas Medical Branch over an in-custody death that happened in 2022.

The family of Victor Gonzales, who was 37 years old at the time of his death, says he was moved as an inmate to Travis County in September 2022.

Gonzales suffered from blood clots but was allegedly denied blood thinners by employees who worked at the Travis County Jail, which the lawsuit claims led to a blood clot forming in his leg and causing his death.

"Based upon our assessment and review, the allegations are not fully accurate," a spokesperson for the Travis County Sheriff's Office said to KVUE in response to a request for comment on the lawsuit. "The Travis County Sheriff's Office takes matters such as this very seriously and continues to review and evaluate these allegations."

The TDCJ has not provided a comment at the time of publication.
