TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas — Editor's note: Although there was a discrepancy between white and Hispanic/Latino stops within the attached report, KVUE confirmed with the Travis County Sheriff's Office that the numbers illustrated below are correct.
The Travis County Sheriff's Office has released its 2019 racial profiling report.
The report analyzed a total of 39,748 motor vehicle stops throughout the year. Of those, the person's race was known prior to the stop in only 845 instances.
Those stops included:
- Male - 25,310
- Female - 14,438
- Black - 4,592
- Asian/Pacific Islander - 1,694
- White - 22,879
- Hispanic/Latino - 10,309
- Alaskan Native/American Indian - 274
In those, reasons for the stop included:
- Law violation - 1,261
- Preexisting knowledge - 183
- Moving traffic violation - 27,230
- Vehicle traffic violation - 11,074
In those stops, a search was conducted in 916 cases. And contraband was discovered in only 465. Reasons for the searches included:
- Consent - 175
- Contraband - 64
- Probable cause - 557
- Inventory - 29
- Incident to arrest - 91
The descriptions of the contraband included:
- Drugs - 388
- Currency - 2
- Weapons - 5
- Alcohol - 49
- Stolen property - 1
- Other - 20
In the cases where arrests were made, those arrests were based on:
- Violation of penal code - 57
- Violation of traffic law - 23
- Violation of a city ordinance - 2
- Outstanding warrant - 44
In all 39,748 stops, physical force resulting in bodily injury was used in only three instances.
Throughout the year, TCSO Internal Affairs investigated and unfounded only one complaint of racial profiling.

The City of Austin released a similar report in January, which revealed that Austin police officers stopped and arrested people of color at disproportionately higher rates.
