ATCEMS: 1 hurt during trench rescue exercise in northeast Austin

Authorities said the person has been removed from the tunnel and taken to hospital.

AUSTIN, Texas — A person was injured during a trench rescue in northeast Austin.

Authorities reported the incident as a tunnel collapse Wednesday morning along I-35 near Park Plaza Drive and Little Walnut Creek.

However, officials later revealed it was not a tunnel collapse, but instead a trench rescue training exercise. Someone who wasn't involved in the drill apparently suffered a medical emergency in the tunnel.

Authorities said the person was removed from the tunnel and taken to St. David's North Austin Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
