Uber latest company to launch electronic scooters in Austin

Uber will be offering free 30 minute rides on their new scooters through Nov. 11.

AUSTIN — Uber announced the launch of their new e-scooters, JUMP, in Austin, making them the only company offering both e-bikes and e-scooters in Austin.

Earlier this year, Uber launched their JUMP e-bikes in Austin, and now, the addition of e-scooters brings another transportation option for Uber users on their app.

To support their new launch, Uber will be offering free 30 minute rides till Nov. 11. After 30 min, a rider will be charged $0.15 for each minute after. A maximum of 5 free rides per day is permitted.

“Riders have told us they like having multiple transportation options available within a single app to fit their various needs,” said David Brightman, JUMP General Manager.

The launch of electronic scooters in the Austin-area hasn't been without controversy. In August, KVUE reported that doctors were seeing a spike in patients having scooter-related injuries. Some Austinites also complained that occasionally they find scooters parked in areas that are hazardous to pedestrians and people with special needs.

To encourage safety, Uber is giving away free helmets and distributing educational resources to riders on how to follow the city’s guidelines for safe practices.

Free helmets will be passed out to riders across Austin this week and helmets will also be available at Uber’s Greenlight Hub on 507 Calles St., Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (3pm-6pm), while supplies last.

Two other e-scooters made their way to Austin earlier this year -- Lime and Bird.
