AUSTIN -- As fog lifts further into the morning Friday, officials said an unharmful "gas odor" coming from a refinery south of the city that has been reported many times by residents in the area will disappear.

The Austin Fire Department and Texas Gas Service investigated the odor throughout the morning before Gas Service officials determined that the smell was not caused by a malfunction or an issue of excessive leaks.

The low clouds and fog Friday morning helped keep the smell at the ground. Once the clouds begin to lift throughout the day the smell should subside, Texas Gas said.

The department asks residents to call 911 if they can detect a gas odor inside their home, but can't determine the source. However, if a gas odor is detected outdoors, "311 is more appropriate" to call.
