A 15-year-old student is recovering after being stabbed in the back and chest Tuesday morning.
It was just a normal day at Ballard-Hudson Middle when things turned dark.
According to Lt. Randy Gonzalez with the Bibb Sheriff’s Office, a call came in about a stabbing at Ballard-Hudson Middle around 11:20 a.m.
Director of Safety and Security, David Gowan says a 14-year-old boy allegedly stabbed a 15-year-old classmate in the back and chest during a class change in the 8th grade hall.
"The victim was stabbed once in the chest and once in the back, but was alert when transported to the hospital," he says.
And when asked how the weapon got into the school.
"We don't have metal detectors, so, you know, we don't search every student," Gowan replied.
And parents like Charles Bailey say when he heard the news.
"I was terrified. That's my child. I don't want her in a school like this where she is going to get hurt. That's a security problem, a major security problem, especially when the campus police department is directly across the street. That really says something," Bailey says.
But Gowan says thanks to campus police and hall monitors the situation didn't escalate.
"The reaction was very quick, the students were separated, and the situation was secured very quickly," Gowan says.
But Bailey says it's not good enough. His 7th grade daughter was assaulted last year, and with this happening so soon after, he has decided to switch schools for her safety.
"I mean, she's getting where she is afraid to go to school, and that shouldn't be," he says.
It's a problem he hopes gets solved before more children's lives are in danger.
Bibb County Schools says the alleged stabbing is under active investigation.
According to safety reports they submitted to the state, students brought knives to Ballard-Hudson three times in the past school year and two other weapons, but there were no firearms incidents at school and no assaults that caused bodily injuries.
