It's another big weekend in Austin as the statewide track and field meet, the Texas Relays, takes place along with the 11th annual Austin Urban Music Festival.

The first weekend in April is brings another music festival to Austin, along with a historic sporting event in the Texas Relays.

Unexpected showers Friday morning delayed the track and field meet at the University of Texas Myers Stadium. Crews took on the tedious task of drying the track while the high school and college athletes, along with fans, waited outside the stadium.

"We looked on the weather app like before and it said it was going to be sunny and 70," said Trent Struck, a Crandall High senior competing in the Texas Relays.

Still, the wet weather didn't dampen Struck's spirit. It's his first time running in the relays.

"It's okay, it's just rain," he said. "I just kind of ignore it. Just focus on the race ahead of me."

Fans feel the same way.

"When you're into sports, you know it comes with the territory. So it's just a temporary delay," said Michael Sharp.

Sharp traveled from Lancaster, just south of Dallas, to attend the Relays. It's a tradition for his family, started by his father.

"He's been coming since '72," Sharp said, "and he's only missed two track meets since 1972."

This year, Sharp also gets to root on his daughter who runs for Texas Southern University, and that's not the only thing he'll enjoy while in Austin.

"I'm going to see Frankie Beverly and Maze [Saturday] night by the lake," he said smiling.

The stage is set and sound checked for the 11th Annual Austin Urban Music Festival at Vic Mathias Shores, formerly Auditorium Shores.

Organizers say it's a family-friendly event, open to all.

"We're for everybody and R&B is for everybody. Everyone has a soul and that's what we give to people," said Director of Marketing Duece Malone.

Friday night, R&B band Dru Hill will perform. Saturday, Comedian Jay Lamont is opening for headliner, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. And the good music helps a good cause.

"All this benefits the Soul Tree Collective and that's every year we build a band from young adults, from ages 13 to like 17 years old. We teach them instruments, they get to make their own songs and they perform here at

Nearly 20,000 people are expected to attend the music festival. Go here for more information on the festival.
