AUSTIN -- It's easy for children to hit a lull during the summer months, and finding things for them to do can be hard at times. But, this can be an especially difficult task if they don't have the resources to keep their bodies and minds active without school being in session.
That's why Austin Angels has made it their mission to work with children who are a part of the foster care system of Central Texas by pairing them up with community members who can give them the individual care and resources unique to their likes and needs.
In 2015, the group launched their Love Box Program through which they're able to serve 200 foster children each month. Susan Ramirez, CEO of Austin Angels, explained that often times foster children are able to be given supplies and things that they need, but that they may not always be given things that they both need and want: clothing that expresses individuality for example.
The Love Box Program is able to pair up a community member with a foster child/family so that they get to know their personalities and better stuff the box with items that better reflect their needs and likes.
"We have a saying that says 'every single child deserves to know the color of their eyes and the passion of their heart,' so it's important for us that our volunteers are pulling those traits out of the child to say 'what are you into and how can we meet those needs?'" Ramirez said. "Every single Love Box is customized to the family, so the volunteer will build a relationship with the family."
Depending on the child and family, the Love Box can be filled with anything from toys to clothing and even cleaning supplies for the parents. The box is delivered to the family once a month, every month for at least a year. Ramirez shared the program has proven to be a rewarding alternative for community members who may not be able to be a foster parent but still want to help out.
"Not everyone is called to foster and not everyone is called to adopt, but everyone can play a role. We show up monthly, we love on these families and we make sure they're able to do everything that they're needing and want to do."
Ramirez shared that Austin Angels is constantly seeking volunteers and more people to be apart of the Love Box program, as well as local businesses to partner up with to help them assemble "summer fun packs" and send children to summer camps.
At the end of July, Austin Angels will kick off their school supply drive for the foster children that they serve, but are already looking for school supplies and funding.
