When you're done 'Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree,' recycle it

Long after Santa makes his way down the chimney and gifts are unwrapped, a lot of happy families are likely to have an excess of trash on their hands.

Long after Santa makes his way down the chimney and gifts under the Christmas tree are unwrapped, a lot of happy families are likely to have an excess of trash on their hands. But Central Texas officials want families to keep as much of that "trash" out of the landfill as possible.

Officials are reminding residents that wrapping paper and cardboard are recyclable. If Travis County and Georgetown residents' gift wrap and cardboard overflows out of their recycling bins, they may place the excess in a larger box set next to the recycling cart. In Georgetown, cellophane wrap and plastic bags are recyclable if they are placed and tied in a yellow bag-the-bag and placed inside the recycling cart.

Christmas trees with no decorations or stands may be placed on the curb in Travis County and Georgetown on designated yard trimmings collection days. Hays County residents may drop off Christmas trees free of charge at the Hays County Recycling and Solid Waste Transfer Stations Dec. 29 through Jan. 16.
