WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas — The Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter is welcoming the community to check out its new expanded adoption center, which will officially open to the public Thursday morning.
Shelter staff and pets have already moved into the new facility off of Wilco Way in Georgetown. The 16,970 square-foot, two-story expansion area features a new adoption center, a public lobby, administration offices, new canine and feline adoption kennels, a parking area for the adoption center, and an exercise yard for dogs.
The cat kennels have nearly doubled and there will be an additional 83 kennels for dogs. And each has a separate eating and sleeping area. The expanded space will let the shelter keep incoming strays separate from the general animal population.

"The less we can expose our general population to those that are coming in, the better we can keep our shelter, the healthier the animals will be," said Misty Valenta of the Williamson County Animal Shelter.
There are also special rooms set up for cats that tend to do better outside the kennels and for people to visit with the animals.
The original shelter first opened its doors in 2007, where renovations are underway to include a new surgery area and surgical prep rooms, repairs to the A/C and plumbing in 35 existing canine kennels, a feline isolation area and a laundry area with a cleanup station.
After the ribbon cutting and grand opening at 11 a.m., the center will kick off an adoption special. All adult cats and dogs seven months or older will have their adoption fees completely waived.
Donations will also be accepted.
