GEORGETOWN, Texas — We'd like to tell you a quick tale. It's being written inside the Williamson County Animal Shelter.
A tale of overwhelming numbers. The shelter was built to house no more than 110 pets. The shelter considers 170 pets "critical overcrowding." But right now?
"Uh, 261 ... I think was the number today," said April Peiffer, who is the Community Programs Coordinator at the shelter.
Make that 265. As we were filming, a woman dropped off a litter of puppies she rescued from Round Rock. That's 265 different tails, including Sully and Axis.
"We don't do time limits," Peiffer said as she called Axis a precious baby. "Each one is treated as an individual."
Speaking of precious, there's Abraham. He's been at the shelter for nine months. He has learned new tricks, made lots of friends, and earned a whole lot of belly rubs.
No matter how many pets get surrendered at the WilCo shelter, and no matter how overcrowded, Pefiffer wants to make one thing clear.
"If it's not good for them to be here, we work ... Really hard to make sure we can find a positive outcome for every single animal," Peiffer said.
They're doing their part. Now it's up to you, whether this tale has a happy ending. As an incentive, the shelter is offering adoptions for just $3.14 for at least this weekend.
The Williamson County animal shelter is open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. daily if you'd like to see Abraham, Sully, Axis, or any of the other 250-plus pets. You can find the shelter on the Southeast Inner Loop near Wilco Way in Georgetown.
