BARTLETT, Texas — A prison will soon reopen in Central Texas.
This week, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the city of Bartlett announced the reopening of the Bartlett Unit, located in northern Williamson County.
Up until 2017, the facility was known as the Bartlett State Jail. It closed because of a declining inmate population, but officials say the prison population is rising in Texas.
The Bartlett Unit will be able to house a little more than 1,000 inmates. The TDCJ said it will offer “a new approach to programs and services designed to support successful rehabilitation and reintegration into society upon release.”
“This reopening is positive for both TDCJ and the city of Bartlett,” TDCJ Executive Director Bryan Collier said. “The Bartlett Unit will not only enhance public safety by providing secure housing for inmates but also contribute to the economic growth of the community.”
Barlett city leaders say it will boost the local economy by adding new jobs.
“The Barlett Unit opening will bring a significant boost to our local economy by offering much-needed jobs, from corrections officers to support staff,” Bartlett Mayor Chad Mees said.
The unit is expected to open in October.
