Hutto man sentenced to 30 years for shooting police car in Georgetown

At sentencing, prosecutors presented additional evidence the man had allegedly threatened his girlfriend and her family with a firearm prior to the shooting.

AUSTIN, Texas — A Hutto man faces 30 years in prison for shooting at an officer in a Georgetown police vehicle.

In May 2021, Georgetown police got a call about a disturbance on Walnut Street in a neighborhood off University Avenue, near Southwestern University and Purl Elementary School.

When police got there, Malcolm Watts started shooting at the police vehicle with his handgun. The officer inside the vehicle was not struck but did have minor cuts from broken glass.

Watts was later taken into custody without incident.

Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick said it was later learned the disturbance was caused by Watts, who was angry after the mother of his children left him and he grew increasingly threatening toward her family.

On Oct. 1, 25-year-old Watts pleaded guilty to aggravated assault of a public servant.

Watts was sentenced on Oct. 10 after a two-day hearing. At the hearing, prosecutors presented additional evidence that Watts had allegedly threatened his girlfriend and her family with a firearm prior to the shooting.

“This was a terrifying incident that could have had a tragic outcome. It underscores the dangers of domestic violence situations and the risks that officers face in the line of duty,” said Dick. “I commend the Georgetown Police Department for deescalating the situation and safely apprehending Mr. Watts. My office will continue to ensure that violent offenders are held accountable and prioritize the safety of our community.”
