Pet owners in Round Rock won't get to leave their pets in their vehicles alone in dangerous conditions under a new ordinance.

The measure bans people from leaving animals in unattended vehicles in such a way as to endanger the animal's health or safety.

People also can't leave animals in the back of a truck-- unless the animal is in a cage.

The new rules require microchipping and make it illegal to use metal chains to tie or stake an animal.

Pet owners who leave pets alone in vehicles will be fined $192, and if they improperly tie or stake an animal, they'll be fined $142.
