Bastrop Crash

PAIGE, Texas -- A woman is dead after a rock flew off a semitrailer and through her car window during a crash involving two 18-wheelers and two cars on U.S. 290 in Bastrop County on Tuesday.

Police identified the woman as Austin resident 70-year-old Caroline McChrystal.

Police received a call around 3:06 p.m. Bastrop County authorities said the semi carrying rocks swerved onto oncoming traffic in an attempt to avoid another truck waiting to turn.

A load of large rocks spilled across the highway and hit the woman's car. She was pronounced dead at the scene and her husband was taken to an area hospital. A truck driver was also taken to the hospital.

Their conditions are unclear and none of the people involved have been identified.

U.S. 290 was closed in both directions following the crash for several hours as crews cleaned up the highway.
